Autumn…in Jeans!
They haven’t always had the charming personality that they boast today or even the noble origins of those who have passed amongst the brocades of great dressmakers. But fashion also has its fairytales of Cinderellas that become princesses.
So here we have jeans, the humble work wear of American miners and Italian sailors in the second half of the nineteenth century, which, after having adorned the legs of cowboys in the Wild West and represented the teenage revolution of the fifties (does James Dean ring a bell?), have earned the right to take their place in the fashion Empyrean to become an inalienable fetish in any wardrobe.
If you don’t have any, then it is time to get some. Because if jeans were one of the must haves for summer 2010, then winter will be no different. Multitasking and comfortable, for the new season the only change will be to abandon the shades of indigo to leave room for darker colours as well as cooler shades of grey and black, but the character, modesty, sex appeal and simplicity will continue to make them the ideal garment for any occasion.
If fashion seems to have stopped imposing reference models, the only real must in the choice of jeans is that they make us feel good and give us that sense of freedom that is at their very core. The green light goes to the boot-cut, slightly flared at the bottom (originally to allow them to be worn over boots), that balance the size of the hips to give a harmonious figure. Or the straight legs with their sophisticated, elegant lines and the tighter models, slightly skinny and stretchy, perfect when paired with loose shirts and flowing cardigans.
If you are looking for maximum comfort then opt for the loose and relaxed lines of the boyfriend fit, of masculine inspiration but with a surprisingly feminine allure, to be worn with wide turn-ups at the ankle and large jackets. And not forgetting the perfect union that has existed for years between jeans and white shirts: a quick and easy choice that is chic and low profile, which with a few centimetres of heel suits more formal situations.
Like any self-respecting cult garment – like the little black dress and white shirts – this much loved denim item always has a place in Marina Rinaldi collections which, during the next season will even see it take centre stage, expressed not only in an infinite number of versions that will be difficult to choose from, but also in an event at the flagship store in Milan during Vogue-Fashion’s Night Out. We’ll keep you posted!
